The recent and rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has captured the world's attention, marking a pivotal moment in the history of our society. Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and others have demonstrated a remarkable ability to understand and execute complex, creative, and open-ended requests, a meaningful departure from the rigid graphical user interfaces that have dominated computing for over half a century.

As illustrated by the recent The 2025 AI Index Report below, we have witnessed a transition from AI mastering basic perception to conquering complex reasoning. While AI surpassed human baselines in image classification as early as 2015, recent years have seen models cross the human threshold in "competition-level mathematics" and even "PhD-level science questions".

This superhuman capability has catalyzed a massive behavioral shift. It is no longer just about researchers in a lab; it is about everyday utility. Usage trends reveal that for U.S. adults aged 18-29, the use of ChatGPT to "learn something new" has climbed steeply to 46% since 2023, with workplace usage following a similarly sharp upward trajectory. For this emerging workforce, AI has evolved into a necessary cognitive partner.

Supporting this adoption is a highly competitive marketplace. We now see a crowded field of models—from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and others—where increasingly powerful capabilities are available at affordable price points, effectively lowering the barrier to entry for intent-based interaction.

However, this rapid ascent has created a paradox: as adoption grows, so does anxiety. While we rely on these tools, we are deeply wary of them. Recent surveys indicate that 50% of Americans are now "more concerned than excited" about the increased use of AI in daily life—a figure that has risen steadily from 37% in 2021.

This convergence of superhuman capability, widespread adoption, and deepening public anxiety signifies a fundamental change in our relationship with technology. We are moving from giving explicit commands to expressing intent, but we are doing so with a partner we do not fully trust. This new paradigm is the core of Human-AI Interaction (HAI). It is a field dedicated not just to making AI systems more useful and usable for humans, but to bridging this trust gap by designing systems that preserve human creativity and agency rather than replacing them.

Human-AI Interaction is an interdisciplinary field that sits at the crossroads of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence.
